PATNA, July 20 -- Leader of the Opposition in Bihar assembly and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday wrote letters to top political leaders of the country including Congress' national president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav, expressing his concern that a large number of voters might be deleted and that the drive, if not opposed now, would be similarly carried out in other states and pose similar danger. In his letter to the top leaders, Yadav said, "The farce and tragedy of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) going on in Bihar is shaking the very foundation of democracy through disenfranchisement. It is a clear indication of how the 'independent institution' of the Election Commission of India ( ECI) is adamant of eroding the public trust in the integrity of our electoral process." Yadav has also stressed that the ECI, issuing figures of electors not found at their addresses or deceased or permanently shifted, were indications that there could be big deletions of electors. He also said that the SIR was not being done transparently and also those seeking transparency and accountability were being targeted. "The experiences of the Maharashtra assembly election are still fresh in our memories. However, we are still waiting to receive a good-faith and substantive response from the ECI. Now, it is Bihar's turn. This needs to be resisted in the strongest terms possible. Because, if we do not raise our voices and register our strong protest, the same will be carried out in other states as well. The Constitution demands that we should defend the republic. We should not be found wanting at this historical juncture," said Yadav....
