Tejashwi seeks votes against RJD candidate in tie-up twist

DARBHANGA, Oct. 31 -- In a rare political twist born out of the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance)'s last minute seat-sharing deal, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday found himself seeking votes against his own party's symbol - the lantern - while campaigning in Gaura Bauram Assembly constituency.
The seat has become a symbol of the Grand Alliance's internal discord. The RJD had initially allotted its symbol to Afzal Ali Khan before the alliance finalised seat adjustments, after which the constituency went to the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP). When Afzal Ali refused to return the RJD symbol and withdrew from the race, the Election Commission recognised him as the official RJD candidate, leaving both the "lantern"and "boat" symbols on the EVM.
Addressing a rally in support of GA official nominee, VIP candidate Santosh Sahani, Tejashwi said, "It was I who helped Afzal rise in politics and gave him the ticket last time. I've spoken to him, and I'll ensure he gets full respect."
Invoking "coalition dharma", Tejashwi urged voters to back the VIP candidate, saying, "This is not just about making someone an MLA; it's about building Bihar."
VIP chief Mukesh Sahni also tried to cool tempers, calling both leaders family and his younger brothers while 'promising' Afzal a seat in the Legislative Council. With Tejashwi appealing against the RJD's own symbol, Gaura Bauram stands out as one of the most intriguing contests of Bihar's 2025 polls.
In the 2020 polls, Swarna Singh had won the seat as a VIP candidate by defeating RJD's Afzal Ali Khan before switching to the BJP. This time, the BJP has fielded her husband, Sujit Kumar - a former IRS officer who recently took voluntary retirement - as the NDA nominee....
