Tejashwi's '243 seats' remark creates ripples in INDIA bloc
PATNA, Sept. 15 -- Just ahead of the formal seat sharing arrangement in the opposition INDIA bloc, there are signs of tension emerging between two main allies RJD and Congress, with leader of the opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav strongly positioning himself as 'face of the opposition bloc' despite Congress playing evasive in declaring the Yadav scion as chief ministerial face of the coalition.
In a public event in Muzaffarpur on Saturday, Tejashwi said, "Whether it is Kanti seat, Bochaha seat , Muzaffarpur seat or Minapur seat, understand that Tejashwi is contesting all 243 seats," Yadav said. Among the four seats named by Yadav, Muzaffarpur is held by Congress.
Evidently, the statement of Yadav has puzzled many within the grand alliance and there are speculations that the former Bihar deputy CM is now keen on playing the pressure game with Congress for twin gains; one, not accepting the proposal of conceding too many seats to accommodate smaller allies, and second, push the grand old party to declare him as the CM face before the polls .
"RJD is the biggest party in INDIA bloc in Bihar and there is no confusion over it. Tejashwi is the CM post claimant and that is why, he has made the statement so that all workers including all allies work in coordination," said an RJD functionary.
Incidentally, RJD insiders said there was some consternation within the party over the way Congress had played a bit evasive on declaration of CM face of the INDIA bloc in Bihar unlike in 2020 when Tejashwi was made CM face much before the polls. A few days back, Congress in-charge of Bihar Krishna Allawaru too said that CM face of the bloc would be decided later.
Besides, the seat sharing talks between RJD and Congress have still not reached a final shape as Congress is apparently playing the hardball by insisting on 'winnable seats' from the RJD instead of accepting the same seats where it contested in 2020.
Besides, the big response of Congress during recent Voter Adhikar Yatra against the alleged anomalies in Special Intensive Revision led by Rahul Gandhi is said to be a reason why Congress now was negotiating hard with RJD in seat sharing talks, said people in the know.
"Of course, the delay in endorsing Tejashwi as CM face by Congress has not gone down well with the RJD. This is the reason, why Tejashwi is playing assertive to position himself as a CM candidate in public rallies," said a senior INDIA bloc leader.
Chittaranjan Gagan, state RJD spokesperson said Tejashwi's statement should be seen positively. "Tejashwi is our CM face and it is quite obvious, voters would be mobilised in his name. There is nothing wrong with it," Gagan said.
Congress leader Asit Nath Tiwary said there was no rift or any differences within the INDIA bloc and the CM face of the coalition would be declared at an opportune time. "There is still confusion within the NDA over the CM face. Have they declared it? In the INDIA bloc, everything is sorted out," Tiwary said.
However, ruling JD(U) said the Yadav scion was getting desperate to be declared as CM face. "Tejashwi is making his own claims and positioning himself as CM face. But it is a pity, allies in the opposition bloc are not accepting him as their leader," said Neeraj Kumar, MLC, JD(U)....
