Tejashwi gets loP nomination and 'free hand' to rebuild rjd
PATNA, Nov. 18 -- Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, who was re-elected from the Raghopur assembly constituency, was unanimously elected as leader of the RJD legislature party in presence of party chief and former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad at a meeting here on Monday. He will formally be nominated as the leader of the Opposition in Bihar legislative assembly for the second time.
Speaking at the meeting, Lalu Prasad gave Tejashwi a 'free hand' to reorganise and strengthen the party with guidance from senior leaders and workers. The RJD patriarch emphasised that he had full faith and confidence in Tejashwi Yadav and his team in an apparent reference to the bitter public feud involving his daughter Rohini Acharya. Expressing his surprise over the electoral outcome, the RJD chief said such type of mandate creates doubts in the public mind. "This type of one-sided result does not come out in any democratic country," he added.
The decision comes days after the Mahagathbandhan suffered a crushing defeat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, managing only 35 seats in the 243-member House. The RJD itself was reduced to 25 seats, while allies Congress (6), CPI(ML) Liberation (2) and CPI(M) (1) fared dismally. In contrast, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a landslide with 202 seats - BJP 89, JD(U) 85, LJP (Ram Vilas) 19, HAM(S) 5 and RLM 4. AIMIM won 5 seats and an Independent 1.
Meanwhile, the shadow of an intense family controversy loomed large over the legislature party meeting. Lalu's elder daughter Rohini Acharya, who had actively campaigned for the RJD, dramatically announced her exit from politics last week, accusing younger brother Tejashwi and others of humiliating her and expelling her from the family home.
Lalu Prasad's remark at Monday's meeting that "family feuds shall not affect the party" is being seen as an attempt to draw a line under the episode and refocus attention on opposition politics.
On the other side of the political divide, JD(U) president and outgoing CM Nitish Kumar tendered his resignation to Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Monday evening, paving the way for formation of the new government. Nitish Kumar is expected to take oath as CM for a record tenth time later this week, heading the BJP-backed NDA government.
For Tejashwi, the road ahead as Leader of the Opposition will be challenging - leading a depleted Mahagathbandhan, rebuilding the RJD organisation, and keeping internal family tensions from spilling into public view once again....
