MOKAMA, Oct. 31 -- The death of Mokama strongman Dular Chand Yadav under mysterious circumstances on Thursday, in the midst of the Bihar Assembly election, has triggered a political storm in the area. Two other strongmen are already in the electoral fray from the Mokama Assembly segment in Patna district. The incident comes amid a tense campaign in Mokama, where Anant Singh (JD-U), Veena Devi (RJD) - wife of former MP Suraj Bhan Singh - and Piyush Priyadarshi (Jan Suraaj Party) are locked in a triangular contest. Bihar will vote in two phases on November 6 and 11. Police said the cause of death would be confirmed only after the postmortem examination. However, Dular Chand's family has alleged that supporters of JD(U) candidate and former MLA Anant Singh, who is contesting against another strongman's wife, Suraj Bhan Singh, were behind the attack. Anant Singh, known for his strongman image, has denied any involvement. "Our vehicles were also vandalised. This whole game is of Surajbhan. He had kept Dularchand with him. Dularchand used to stay with him," Anant Singh said. Patna Range Inspector General (IG) Jitendra Rana said that police were camping in the area to prevent any retaliation or violence. "The focus is on completing the postmortem at the earliest. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim had no firearm injury marks on the upper part of his body. We are also waiting for a complaint from the family," he added. Dular Chand, a close aide of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, was popular in his area of influence. His death is alleged to have resulted from gunshot injuries, even as the area remains heavily guarded by paramilitary forces ahead of the first phase of polling. According to the family, Dularchand was shot and then run over by a vehicle while campaigning in Basavanchak village with Jan Suraj Party candidate Piyush Priyadarshi. JSP supporters alleged that Priyadarshi's convoy was following Anant Singh's vehicle when Anant's supporters suddenly attacked them with sticks and rods. They claimed several windows of luxury vehicles were smashed, and when Dularchand stepped out to intervene, he was attacked. Shortly after the incident, Priyadarshi went live on Facebook, alleging that Anant's supporters had attacked his convoy. "The administration is silent while our people are being killed. We will fight back," he said, adding that the JSP would not tolerate intimidation. The JSP later clarified that Dularchand was not a party member, but was supporting its candidate in Mokama. Dularchand's grandson Ravi Ranjan Kumar alleged, "We had been receiving repeated death threats from Anant Singh. Anant and one of my rivals were seen together earlier in the day. Later, 15-20 people came and shot my grandfather before fleeing the spot." RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav condemned the killing, saying, "There's no need for violence during elections. The code of conduct is in place, yet some people are roaming around with guns and bullets. Dularchand was murdered in Mokama. Who is protecting these criminals? The people of Bihar will give them a befitting reply." Barh SDPO (II) Abhishek Singh said, "Police received information that convoys of two parties clashed when one side opened fire and tried to run over the other. An FIR will be registered, and forensic experts have been informed. A proper investigation is underway."...
