SSB jawans get injuries during clash in Bihar's East Champaran
BETTIAH, July 13 -- Jitna police in Bihar's East Champaran district have registered a case against over 200 Nepali nationals, allegedly led by smugglers, for orchestrating an attack on Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel along the Indo-Nepal border. The incident left four jawans injured, police said on Saturday.
According to Sudhir Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Jitna police station, a case has been filed against 250-300 unidentified individuals from Nepal who clashed with jawans of the 71st Battalion of the SSB at Brahm Seema Chowki near Agarwa, under the Jitna police station limits, in the early hours of Friday.
"We are investigating the matter," the SHO said.
SSB officials said the situation turned tense around 3 a.m. on Friday when security personnel tried to seize a urea-laden vehicle. A crowd of around 250-300 people, including women and children, reportedly attacked the personnel in retaliation.
For nearly 20 minutes, the border village resembled a war zone as the jawans were pelted with stones by the mob. Four SSB personnel sustained injuries in the attack. The mob retreated only after the jawans opened fire in self-defence, an official said.
"By the time the situation was brought under control, the smugglers had escaped into Nepal with most of the consignment. We managed to seize only 16 bags of urea that were being smuggled," said Prafful Kumar, Commandant of the 71st Battalion.
