BHABUA, July 24 -- The special judge for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, District and Additional Sessions Judge Ajit Kumar Mishra, on Wednesday sentenced a narcotics smuggler to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs.1.5 lakh on the convict, with an additional six months' imprisonment in case of default, said Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Mithilesh Kumar Singh. Acting on a tip-off regarding a large consignment of cannabis being transported, a police team from Chainpur, led by Sub-Inspector Amarendra Kumar, intercepted a motorcycle near the Rupapatti canal bridge on January 22, 2023. While one of the smugglers managed to flee, the accused, Jodha Bind - a resident of Parasia village under Chainpur police station - was arrested with 43 kg of cannabis. His motorcycle was also seized. Police later filed a charge sheet in the special court under Sections 8(c), 20(ii)(C), 27(A), and 29 of the NDPS Act.
