PATNA, July 6 -- The sensational murder of industrialist Gopal Khemka on Friday night has once again brought the spotlight on the murder of BJP activist, prominent industrialist and his son, Gunjan Khemka (36). Both father and son were murdered in near identical manner. In the Friday's case, just one person has been spotted in the CCTV footage procured by the police. He was sitting on a motorcycle with helmet on, waiting for the vehicle of Gopal Khemka to arrive. As the vehicle arrived and stopped at the gate, the man got down unhurriedly, opened fire at Khemka from a close range and walked away with consummate ease in an area that is surrounded by the top brass of the district administration. Police officials involved in probing the killing of Gunjan Khemka in December 2018 at Hajipur said that the assailant had specific information about Gunjan's sitting on the left side of the driving seat, as well as his arrival time. "With tinted glasses, he could not easily see him, but he confidently walked to the left front seat and fired three shots from a close range, almost touching the glass," said an investigator. The officer said that the firing from a close range meant that the glass of the window did not break. "The bullets left a hole in the glass, killing Khemka. After that, the man got back to his motorcycle, started it and moved towards Paswan Chowk in Hajipur. The similarities in both murders suggest that Gopal Khemka was also being closely monitored. The killer appeared to have precise information about his routine," he added. Police sources suspect that like Gunjan, Gopal may have been targeted for business or land-related reasons. Gunjan Khemka, who was the convener of the state BJP's small industries cell, was gunned down on December 20, 2018 barely 700 metres from Industrial police station area at NH-103 Hajipur-Jandaha road. He was trying to set up a hospital in Gurugram and a rice mill on the outskirts of Patna. Following the sensational murder of industrialist Gunjan Khemka, then Director General of Police (DGP) K.S. Dwivedi, along with then Additional Director General (CID) Vinay Kumar (now DGP) and then IG of Tirhut range Sunil Kumar (now ADG, Special Branch), visited Khemka's cotton factory on December 27, 2018. The senior officers also inspected the crime scene and questioned factory guards and staff regarding the incident. On February 9, 2019, with the arrest of two history-sheeters, police claimed to have cracked the case. Two former sharpshooters-Mastu Verma alias Abhishek and Rahul alias Chiku-were arrested from the Patna City area. Mastu, a former police informant, had over 20 criminal cases registered against him. He was also reported to be active in the real estate business with alleged backing from influential white-collar individuals. Police sources said preliminary investigations suggested that Mastu had hired a sharpshooter to eliminate Gunjan Khemka, allegedly over a land dispute. Khemka had reportedly shown interest in purchasing a plot of land that also attracted attention from some powerful individuals. Mastu is said to have threatened Khemka, demanding extortion or urging him to "settle with Saheb," according to police findings. As per officials from police headquarters, Vaishali police filed a chargesheet in 2019 against four accused: Abhishek alias Mastu, Rahul Anand alias Chiku, Arun Kumar Singh alias Arun Choudhary (all residents of Patna City), and Anand Kumar alias Anand Choudhary (of Vaishali district). The case is currently under trial in the Hajipur court. However, on December 19, 2021, Mastu Verma and another individual, Sunil Kumar, were killed in what police described as a gang war at the Chowk Kasera weighing station under Bypass police station in Patna. Mastu Verma was believed to be close to Ajay Verma, a former criminal from the Patna City area, who is now lodged in Beur Central Jail. Ajay Verma had unsuccessfully contested the 2015 Assembly elections from the Kumhrar seat against BJP's Arun Sinha, who now heads the Lal Bahadur Shastri Vichar Manch. He is also considered the prime suspect in the murder of industrialist Gopal Khemka, prompting the administration to conduct raids inside Beur Jail in connection with the ongoing investigation....
