Six police personnel injured in mob attack in Rohtas; 40 arrested
SASARAM, Aug. 1 -- At least six policemen, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), an inspector, two station house officers (SHOs), and two sub-inspectors (SIs), including a woman officer, were injured when an angry mob attacked Dinara police station in Bihar's Rohtas district on Thursday, officials said.
The mob, armed with traditional weapons and shouting slogans, also vandalised two police vehicles parked on the station premises and ransacked furniture during the attack. Heavy stone pelting was reported during the incident, according to police.
The unrest stemmed from a land dispute in Belwaiyan village, where Shivji Singh alias Babua Singh was ploughing his field using a tractor for paddy transplantation. The land in question had previously been declared excess under the Land Ceiling Act and redistributed by the administration to Scheduled Caste beneficiaries. However, a recent Patna High Court order overturned the administrative decision and reinstated Singh as the legal owner.
Despite the court ruling, the opposing party resisted Singh's attempt to reclaim the land. Tensions escalated when hundreds of people from Belwaiyan and neighbouring villages - including Karanj, Jigina, and Parshurampur - gathered at the site. Police said the gathering was allegedly led by individuals with vested political interests, aiming to exploit the situation.
Sensing the volatility, Dinara SHO Vinay alerted senior officers and nearby police stations before heading to the scene with available forces. Police initially halted the ploughing to prevent escalation, but the mob, allegedly incited by local leaders, turned violent and advanced toward the police station.
In the meantime, Bikramganj SDPO Kumar Sanjay, Inspector Sher Singh Yadav, and police personnel from Dawath and Suryapura police stations rushed to the spot and attempted to stop the crowd from storming the station. However, the mob resorted to intense stone pelting and used traditional weapons to attack the officers.
Those injured in the assault include SDPO Kumar Sanjay, Inspector Sher Singh Yadav, Dawath SHO Kripal Ji, Suryapura SHO Manish Sharma, SIs Kaushal Kumar and Savita Kumari, along with several constables. Three officers sustained head injuries.
Rohtas Superintendent of Police (SP) Raushan Kumar, who reached the site with additional reinforcements, managed to disperse the mob and bring the situation under control. "A massive crackdown has been launched and 40 accused have been arrested so far," the SP said, adding that he is camping at the site to personally monitor police operations....
