Six killed in lightning strikes across Bihar
BUXAR/BETTIAH/BHABUA, June 17 -- At least six persons were killed as lightning struck at Buxar and West Champaran villages whereas 10 tribal persons, nine of them children, were injured at Chainpura hilly village under Adhaura police station of Kaimur district on Monday morning, police said.
At Buxar, four persons were killed in two separate incidents while five other were injured.
Three persons were killed on the banks of Ganges near Chausa Bazar under Buxar muffasil police station. The victims were identified as Mithlesh Ram and Virendra Gond of Chausa Bazar and Sri Bhagwan alias Jhola Singh of Narbatpur.
The injured included Neeraj Kumar, Amit Chaudhary, Sonu Kumar and one more yet to be identified.
SHO of Buxar Muffasil police station Shambhu Kumar Bhagat said all had gone on the banks of Ganges. When weather changed, they tried to hide themselves under a tree and came under contact of lightning resulting into death of three and injury to four.
In the second incident, one person died and another got injured at Devadhiya under Rajpur police station. The victim was identified as Ankush Ram while injured was identified as Anant Ram.
SHO of Rajpur police station Sunil Kumar Shah said both were in open space when lightning struck. The injured was at first admitted to PHC at Rajpur from where he was referred to Buxar sadar hospital.
In West Champaran, at least two villagers died and as many were injured when lightning struck them at a village.
Confirming the deaths, Ramnagar's circle officer (CO) Ved Prakash said while Shahabuddin Ansari and Afsar Ansari died, two others were injured at Meghwal Mathiya village in Ramnagar block on Monday morning.
"Bodies of the deceased have been sent for postmortem, while the injured people have been admitted to the community health center (CHC) at Ramnagar," the CO said.
People familiar with the matter said the incident occurred when the victims were hiding under a tree in an orchard after rain lashed Meghwal Mathiya.
An ex-gratia compensation was given to the next of kin of each deceased as per rule, the circle officer added.
In Kaimur district, 10 tribal persons, nine of them children, were injured when lightning struck them while they were picking mangoes under a tree amidst heavy rains and thunder, police said. All the 10 injured were out of danger, said Dr Piyush Kumar and Kavita Kumari attending them....
