PATNA, Dec. 17 -- A sessions trial court in Jamui on Tuesday sentenced six people to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Gokul Yadav. Gokul was gunned down by bike-borne assailants on August 10, 2022, near Gopalmaran village under the Simultala police station area in Jamui district, when he was on his way to Lohia Chowk to collect news. Police investigation revealed that the journalist, who worked for a Hindi vernacular daily, was killed due to rivalry linked to the 2022 panchayat elections. Gokul's wife was a mukhiya candidate in the elections, and post-poll enmity with influential persons allegedly led to the crime. Police had later arrested six accused in the case and filed a chargesheet against them. On Tuesday, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ)-7 Amrendra Kumar, on the basis of strong evidence and witness testimonies, convicted all six accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Public prosecutor Chandra Bhanu Singh said the ADJ court awarded life imprisonment to all the convicted persons.
