second CPI-ML candidate held within 24 hours in an old case
PATNA, Oct. 16 -- CPI-ML candidate from Bhore constituency in Gopalganj district, Jitendra Paswan, was arrested on Wednesday moments after filing his nomination papers for the same seat. He is the second CPI-ML candidate to be arrested after filing nominations within 24 hours.
Gopalganj police told HT that an arrest warrant was pending against Paswan in connection with an eight-year-old murderous attack case registered with Vijaipur police station. The case was under trial, and Paswan was found absent during the proceedings, prompting the court to issue a warrant. Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Awadhesh Dixit said that police at the Hathua Campus, where the nomination process was underway, executed the court order after Paswan submitted his nomination papers.
Following his arrest, CPI-ML workers and activists staged protests on the road, blocking traffic and raising slogans against the Education Minister and JD(U) MLA from Bhore, Sunil Kumar. Protestors alleged a political conspiracy, claiming the arrest was planned to obstruct the Grand Alliance candidate. Earlier on Tuesday, Siwan police arrested Darauli MLA Satyadeo Ram in connection with a 2005 'rail roko' agitation.
