Sea of supporters join JMM patriarch on final journey
RANCHI, Aug. 6 -- A galaxy of people from all walks of life, including top politicians to common villagers thronged Nemra in Ramgarh district as the mortal remains of former Jharkhand chief minister and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) patron Shibu Soren were consigned to flames on Tuesday.
People bid adieu to the 'Dishom Guru', as he was fondly called by the masses, with moist eyes as a sombre atmosphere prevailed in the native village of the JMM co-founder, whose last rites were held with full state honours amid tight security arrangements. The JMM co-founder died on Monday at a hospital in Delhi while undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments. He was 81.
People raised slogans of 'Guruji amar rahe' (long live guruji) as his elder son and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren lit the pyre, eyewitnesses said.
"The mortal remains were brought from Ranchi to his paternal home in Nemra. After initial rituals, Guruji was taken on his last journey from his home to the Ghat. Chief minister Hemant Soren lit the pyre at around 4.30 pm. Thousands of supporters have gathered from across the state to get a last glimpse of our leader despite heavy rains," JMM spokesperson Manoj Pandey said.
Earlier, Shibu Soren's mortal remains were laid on a flower-decked Charpoy (bed) at his ancestral home in the village in adherence to full tribal customs, even as near and dear ones made a beeline to offer shrouds, chadar, shawls and bouquets. The coffin was wrapped in the Tricolour and the JMM flag.
An emotional wheelchair-bound Roopi Soren, Shibu Soren's wife, was unable to control her tears, while his sons Hemant and Basant, and daughter-in-law Kalpana were seen standing silently as grief writ large on their faces. The house was packed with people paying their last respects, with many breaking down.
Earlier in the day, people lined up on both sides of the road to pay their last respects as the hearse carried Shibu Soren's body to Nemra from the Jharkhand assembly in Ranchi, around 75 km away. Hemant Soren, clad in a white kurta-pyjama, and a traditional tribal 'gamcha' on his shoulders, was seen sitting in the vehicle with folded hands.
A beeline of vehicles followed the carcade. Later photos and videos emerged showing the chief minister, after lighting the pyre, acCepting condolences from thousands of supporters trying to offer their last tribute near the pyre.
While several leaders from across party lines paid floral tributes to the veteran leader, Congress chief Malikarjuna Kharge and leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi arrived in Ranchi to attend the cremation. However, due to bad weather they had to set out for Nemra by road. They were yet to reach Nemra till the time of filing this report, people aware of the development said. "The Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjuna Kharge are yet to arrive. RJD leader Tejashwai Yadab arrived here at around 6 pm," said Manoj Pandey, who was present in Nemra.
Former Jharkhand chief minister and senior BJP leader Arjun Munda and AJSU Party chief Sudesh Mahto reached the funeral venue on a motorcycle in view of massive traffic jams on the roads....
