PATNA, July 25 -- A scrap dealer was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants outside his shop late on Wednesday night, allegedly over a long-standing land dispute. The incident occurred near Majhaulia under the jurisdiction of Muzaffarpur's Town police station, police said. The victim, Mohammad Gulab (45), had just closed his shop and was sitting outside when unidentified assailants approached and shot him thrice in the head at point-blank range, according to eyewitnesses. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Following the murder, tension gripped the area as angry locals and family members staged a massive protest with Gulab's body. They marched to National Highway-28 and blocked the road by placing the body at the protest site. Enraged by the killing, the mob gathered at the residence of one of the accused, Mohammad Tufail alias Bhutto (a panchayat samiti member), vandalised the property, and set two cars and a motorcycle parked outside on fire. A police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vinita Sinha reached the spot to bring the situation under control.
