Samrat to take oath with two JD(U) deputy cms, expansion later
PATNA, April 15 -- BJP leader Samrat Choudhary will take oath as the chief minister of Bihar on Wednesday (today) with deputy chief ministers, both from the JD(U), a senior functionary of the JD(U) said.
According to the JD(U) functionary, two deputy chief ministers will be Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Choudhary who will take oaths along with the new CM.
Meanwhile, there were murmurs in the political circles that Nitish Kumar's son Nishant, who was recently inducted into the JD(U), might also get a cabinet berth later once the expansion of the ministries will be done.
"There will only three persons taking oath on Wednesday. The cabinet expansion may happen after election in other states, as all the NDA constituents have to finalise their lists," said another JD(U) leader.
While the political transition in Bihar, with CM-position swapping from the JD(U) to the BJP, is being seen as significant, the two senior most NDA leaders taking the role of deputies to a comparatively much younger CM is also noteworthy.
Yadav has been a 9-time MLA from Supaul and was seen as No. 2 in the JD(U), while Choudhary has represented Dalsinghsarai and Sarairanjan seats in Samastipur seven times. Both were consistently part of Nitish cabinets with important portfolios and were considered close aides of Nitish Kumar.
Age wise also, Samrat Choudhary, 57, is much younger to Yadav, 80, and Vijay Kumar Choudhary, 69.
What is also significant about all the three who would take oath as No.1, 2 & 3 is their varied political journey.
With the announcement of Samrat Choudhary as the first BJP CM in Bihar, the party has followed a familiar trend apparent in the last one decade when it installed leaders inducted from other parties as CM, starting with Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam.
There are quite a few other examples like Pema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh), N Biren Singh (Manipur), Manik Saha (Tripura). Now, Samrat has joined the list. He started his political journey from the RJD (from 1990 to 2014), later joined the JD(U) and finally landed in the BJP in 2017.
Bijendra Prasad Yadav started his journey form Janata Dal, becoming the legislator for the first time in 1990. Know for his integrity, he has the unique experience of working with both Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar.
Vijay Choudhary, on the other hand, started his journey from the Congress and later moved to the JD(U). He was also the JD(U) state president and Speaker of the Bihar Vidhan Sabha. He has been a close aide of Nitish Kumar.
A senior JD(U) leader said that the JD(U) has sent a strong message by placing two senior leaders at the helm that it has the wherewithal to maintain the tempo post-Nitish Kumar.
"It is a party shaped by Nitish Kumar, who has proved his mettle time and again. Nitish Kumar has shaped Bihar and his inspiration will be the guiding force for the new government. JD(U) is well organised and eager to take forward the Nitish legacy," he added.
In keeping with the strength of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, Bihar can have a maximum of 36 ministers, including the CM.
The last Nitish cabinet had eight ministers from the JD-U and 14 from the BJP, besides two form the LJP and one each from the HAM-S and RLM. All of them had taken oath with the CM, keeping nine slots vacant to be filled up later, but it did not happen.
In the previous cabinet, JD(U) had stuck to experienced faces, while BJP went in for some fresh faces. It remains to be seen how soon the expansion takes place after Wednesday's oath.
"It will be decided carefully balancing caste, regional representation, and coalition partner demands within the NDA. Some MLCs are also claimants," said a senior leader.
However, social analyst NK Choudhary said that oath of just CM and two deputy CMs will not give the right signal. "It is a fact that both the deputy CMs are vastly experienced and knowledgeable. Samrat will have to do delicate balancing. With Nitish Kumar, it was a different scenario due to his high stature. Samrat will have to tread cautiously," he added....
