Sambhar Deer shot dead in Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, one poacher nabbed
BHABUA, Nov. 23 -- Forest cops arrested a poacher and recovered a killed matured Sambhar Deer in a late-night raid in Kadwa forests under Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary. The team also seized a SUV, weapons and instruments for cutting flesh from the place near Tala village in Adhaura police station of Kaimur district.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Kaimur, Sanjeev Ranjan said that a forest patrolling team led by Range Officer Manoj Kumar, at about 1.30am on Saturday, noticed some suspicious activities and rushed inside the Kadwa forests.
The team found that four to five wildlife poachers, on a SUV, had shot dead a matured Sambhar Deer and were cutting the flesh to put in sacks.
The team chased the fleeing poachers and arrested one of them who was later identified as Md Sahil of Adhaura. Other accused escaped in the dense forests with firearms under cover of darkness. Meat-cutting tools, sacks and other hunting-related materials were recovered from the scene and the SUV was seized.
The carcass of hunted Sambhar, weighing 250kg, and had been shot twice, was also seized.
Sambhar Deer is a protected animal under Schedule III of the Wildlife Protection Act and its hunting invites seven years of imprisonment and also a fine not less than Rs.25,000. A case against one named and four unidentified poachers had been registered under sections 9, 26A, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32, 50 and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Intensive interrogation of the arrested accused is underway and forest cops were identifying the other accused with the help of call details and ground intelligence, the DFO said.
Apprehending that it could be part of a big hunting racket operating in the area, patrols had been increased and surveillance was tightened throughout the forest area. The people were appealed to immediately report any suspicious activity, he added....
