PATNA, April 18 -- The police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the murder case of 18-year-old rugby player Jai Kumar Singh alias 'Jackie' by arresting two of his friends, both minors and also rugby players and batchmates. The cause of the murder is said to be love affair, according to police. "One of the two minors and the slain rugby player loved the same girl, who also happens to be a rugby player. The minor was jealous of the growing proximity of Jai Singh with the girl and so he planned to kill him with the help of their common friend," Patna SSP Garima Mallik said at a press conference in Patna on Wednesday. The deceased was a budding player and had played at national level championships. Singh, a resident of Barh subdivision, was shot dead at a ground located near Church road of the small town falling in Patna district on Tuesday. One country-made pistol and two live cartridges were recovered from the suspects and police have confirmed the weapon was used in the crime. "In their statements, the duo have both confessed their involvement in the crime," said Mallik. "It is love triangle that led to the crime," Mallik said, adding that the countrymade pistol used in the crime had been sent to the forensic science laboratory (FSL) in Patna for ballistic test. The SSP also that the investigating team led by Barh police ASP Lipi Singh would be rewarded for the cracking the case promptly. In Singh's murder, Bihar lost a second promising rugby player in the last three years. Earlier, on June 19, 2016, 17-year-old Vishwanath Sharan had died during a Bihar state junior rugby football championship match at Ghosi, Jehanabad district.
