RJD-Cong still to iron out differences on few seats
PATNA, Oct. 16 -- The fog over seat-sharing talks in the INDIA bloc remained even as only 48 hours were left for filing of fist phase nomination for the upcoming Bihar elections. The root cause, according to insiders, was the tussle between the RJD and Congress that were wrestling over their claims on four to five seats.
Meanwhile, several of RJD leaders were allotted party symbols to file their nominations, with RJD's prime face Tesjahwi Yadav being among them. Similarly, Congress was also said to have given symbols to a few nominees.
On Wednesday evening, top Congress leaders including state president Rajesh Kumar along with Congress legislature Party(CLP) leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan and others reached Patna after deliberations with top Congress leaders on seat sharing formula with RJD and identify the 'choice seats' which party wants this time from the RJD.
Sources said the top state Congress leaders are scheduled to hold meeting with RJD chief Lalu Prasad and also Opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav in late evening today to discuss a final seat sharing deal.
"Around 43 seats have been cleared by the Congress in consultation with the RJD and other allies. There is still some glitches over few seats where election would be held in the first phase and nomination process would end on October 17. That is the reason why the seat sharing deal has got delayed," said a senior Congress leader, in the know of the matter.
Among the seats where Congress still has dispute with RJD include Benipatti , Benipur , Jale, Vaishali, Sikandra, Lakhisarai, top sources said. It is said , the RJD is still firm on seeking Jale seat, Vaishali seat , Sikandra and Lakhisarai from Congress apart from few other seats.
Incidentally, today, the RJD also issued a list of around 35 candidates who have been given the party symbols, which includes names of several sitting MLAs and Osama Saheb, son of deceased former Siwan strongman and MP,Mohammed Shahabuddin. Osama would be contesting from Raghunathpur seat in Siwan district while former Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary too has been given a ticket from Siwan assembly seat, sources said. Around twelve candidates of the RJD have filed their nomination papers so far including opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.
There are indications hectic parleys between the RJD and Congress held on Tuesday night have progressed positively with the RJD taking a more conciliatory approach to accept the demand of the grand old party to give 60 plus seats. The RJD, however, has set a condition that Congress would have to give up its claim on few seats as demanded by it.
Under the seat sharing formula being discussed among major allies in Mahagathbandhan in Bihar for giving a final deal, the RJD may contest 136 seats while Congress may be allotted around 60-61 seats while Vikasheel Insaan Party (VIP) led by Mukesh Sahani may get 18 seats. The left parties including CPI-ML(liberation) may get 20 seats of which 18 seats have already been approved by the RJD whereas CPI and CPM may get in total 10 seats, insiders said.
"There is all likelihood that a final list of candidates or a partial list of candidates by RJD, Congress and other allies would be officially declared on Thursday. By late night today, the chances of Congress and RJD ironing out their differences and stitching a seat sharing arrangement is possible," said a senior RJD leader.
Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday while talking to reporters hinted that the alliance was heading towards a final resolution of seat-sharing tussle. "I believe the decision will be made in a day or two. Discussions are underway, and I think a final call will be taken soon," he said....
