Rift in NDA as Chirag hits out at Nitish govt
PATNA, July 27 -- Two NDA parties, the JD (U) and the LJP (RV) are face to face over law and order issue raised by Lok Janshakti Party (Ram-Vilas) leader and Union minister Chirag Paswan who on Saturday hit out at the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government, saying he feels sad to support a government incapable of curbing crime. The JD(U) reacted strongly and advised the LJP (RV) leader to introspect about his own party and stop criminals from entering the party.
Paswan said the administration in Bihar is completely incapable of stopping incidents of murder, kidnapping, robbery and rapes.
The remark from the LJP (RV) leader comes after a 26-year-old woman, participating in a Home Guard recruitment drive in Gaya, was allegedly gang-raped inside an ambulance. The incident, which happened on July 24, occurred while she was being transported to a hospital after she collapsed during a physical test. "The way crime is happening in Bihar, the administration has totally bowed down in front of the criminals. It is correct that this incident required condemnation, but why are such incidents happening? There is a series of crimes. If it continues like this, the situation would be frightening, rather, it has become so... If it is said that it is happening because of the election, I can also aver it might possibly be so, it might be a conspiracy to defame the government, but even then, it is the responsibility of the administration to control it... Amidst all this, I request the government to take timely steps. I feel sad that I am supporting a government where crime has become uncontrolled," Chirag said.
Paswan also accused the state government of either trying to cover up the situation or being unable to handle the situation.
This incidentally, is not the first time the NDA ally attacked the Nitish-led state government over the law and order situation. Earlier this month, Chirag attacked the Bihar government, saying that "the morale of the criminals was sky-high" in the state. "Murders are happening every day. The morale of criminals is sky-high. The strategy of the police and administration is beyond comprehension. The attack inside Paras hospital in Patna's residential neighbourhood proves that criminals are openly challenging the law and administration," he wrote on X.
The JD(U) reacted strongly and asked Chirag-led LJP (RV) to introspect themselves. "Leaders before issuing statements and giving sermons should first introspect about their own party. Those who are raising questions on law and order should ensure that their party will not allow entry of leaders with criminal background," said JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan. "No state can think of making a state crime free. Incidents can take place anywhere and it has taken place in Bihar too. But we think that in Bihar law and order is better as compared to other states as police with full responsibility has cracked cases, arrested criminals. The government is going to start 100 fast track courts for speedy trials," he added.
The statement by Chirag on law and order has once again increased the discomfort in NDA alliance ahead of assembly polls. Chirag Paswan, who is an ally of the JD(U) and the BJP and is part of the NDA in Bihar, recently expressed his desire to contest the Bihar polls on all 243 seats. This has alarmed the JD(U).
In 2020, Chirag's party, the then united LJP, had fielded candidates on 137 of 243 seats in the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls. The party had won just one seat, but significantly cut into the JD(U)'s vote share. The JD-U and the BJP contested the 2020 polls in alliance (NDA). The undivided LJP was not part of it then. The LJP officially split into two parties - Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party - in 2021.
Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav also criticised the incident. In a post on X, he said -- A girl who had come to participate in the recruitment of Home Guard in Gaya fell unconscious and in the same unconscious state she was gang-raped in the ambulance, called by the administration. "Would you call this the demon rule in Bihar? Would you call it the rule of evildoers protected by criminals? Would you call it the great jungle rule or the misrule of Modi-Nitish?" he said....
