SAHARSA, June 5 -- A 62-year-old retired teacher and former panchayat samiti member was shot dead while monitoring maize harvesting in his field in Bihar's Saharsa district on Tuesday evening. The incident has sent shockwaves through the area, where the deceased was a well-known and respected figure. The victim, identified as Vijay Singh, was a resident of Samharkhurd under the jurisdiction of Chiraiya police station. He was overseeing the harvesting in his field about a kilometre from his house when three assailants on a motorcycle arrived and opened fire on him. "He was hit by multiple bullets and died while being rushed to the hospital," police said. Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Mohammad Sujauddin, who visited the site, said that forensic experts collected evidence from the scene.
