BETTIAH, July 13 -- Great grandson of father of nation, Tushar Gandhi, on Saturday urged chief minister Nitish Kumar rename Champaran as Champaran Satyagrah. He said this during his visit to Mahatma Gandhi's Bhitiharwa Asharam in Bihar's West Champaran district Speaking to the media at Bhitiharwa, Gandhi said that his request for Champaran districts being tagged with Satyagrah made CM Nitish Kumar in 2019 and the latter's assurances for the same has remained unfulfilled. "I seek to refresh the promises of CM Nitish with a request to rechristen Champaran as Champaran Satyagrah. For, this land has been the mother of satyagrah from where Bapu launched his fight against Britons for the cause of indigo planters and culminated in Indian national movement," said Gandhi, praising the locals and authorities for their efforts to maintain and upkeep this legacy of Mahatma Gandhi aesthetically beautiful. Located in West Champaran district of Bihar, Bhitiharwa, comprising around 200 dwelling houses, rests on the foothills of Sumershwar Hill. Standing tall in the midst of the village, the original ashram is said to have collapsed and was remodelled a few years ago. The renovated ashram is divided into three unequal-sized rooms in which the bigger one has a bigger claim on Gandhian belongings. The larger of the three rooms is adorned by several photographs of Gandhi. But a bell hanging on the wall strikes attention. A sticker beneath the bell says, "Gandhiji ke pathshala ki ghanti" (bell of Gandhiji's school). A wooden table frequently used by Gandhi during his exile here also adorns the room. All its four legs are broken. Next to this is a small room which was Gandhi used as bedroom. However, a Gandhi statue and some photographs on the walls narrate the agonizing lives that were sacrificed for the cause of nation. Gandhi's scion, however, took Baa (Kasturba Gandhi) contribution towards for people a few notches higher. "Unnerved by her contribution, her cottage was burnt twice at the behest of English manager Erwin twice, but she remained undeterred. This, eventually, prompted Bapu to launch the national movement," said Tushar Gandhi....
