ARA/PATNA, Oct. 5 -- Relentless rainfall for over 24 hours wreaked havoc across several districts of Bihar, leading to flooding, road collapses, and massive waterlogging. The worst-hit areas include Rohtas, Sasaram, Motihari, Gopalganj, Bhojpur where the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed for rescue operations. The India Meteorological department (IMD) has issued flash flood alerts for districts which included Patna, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Siwan, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya Ji, Madhubani, Purnia and other districts. The condition became so bad in Bhojpur district that DM Tanai Sultania passed an order for closure of all schools and Anganwadi centres for Saturday. In Saran district too, all schools and Anaganwadi centres were closed too on Saturday in view of the red alert for heavy rains. An aged person died due to lightning at Bachri under Sandesh police station of Bhojpur district. SHO of Sandesh police station Sanjeev Kumar said victim was identified as 61 years old Kanhaiya Sah of Bachri. He was sleeping in hut situated in his field when the lightning struck. His dead body was sent for autopsy at Ara sadar hospital. In Ara town at several places including at government bus stand, power grid premises, outside the Hanuman temple of Ramna maidan waterlogging was found. At Garahni, water reached up to bridge made over Banas river. Power supply in Ara town was disrupted for several hours due to falling of tree on road and also on electric wires and poles at several places like at Bahiro, Tetariya crossing, near DEO office and at many more places. Several power transformers were also badly damaged. In Rohtas district's Dehri area, the situation turned critical after incessant rain caused severe flooding in Jamuhar. The SDRF launched rescue operations, while NDRF teams are being called in. According to officials, several doctors, patients, and staff were trapped inside Narayan Medical College after floodwaters surrounded the campus. The SDRF teams safely evacuated those stranded, many of whom had been stuck in their quarters since last night. In Rohtas and Kaimur districts, heavy rain has caused local rivulets to outflow, leading to flood like situation in several parts. In Rohtas, flood waters are flowing over roads including GT road in Karbandia and nearby areas. Due to heavy rainfall, severe waterlogging has occurred in various streets and localities in Sasaram town causing inconvenience to common people. In Muzaffarpur and Sheohar districts too, waterlogging was found in several locality, including within Muzaffarpur railway station premises. Farmers said that heavy rain would cause delay in sowing potato and mustard. In Patna, due to heavy rainfall, the road beneath the Mithapur flyover suddenly collapsed. A portion of the road caved in, creating a tunnel-like pit. No injuries were reported though. Relief and repair work was underway till the time of reporting. According to IMD bulletin, East Champaran received 122 mm of rainfall till 5.30 pm, followed by Rohtas 197 mm. State capital Patna received 32.9 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am till 5.30 pm on Saturday.
