Raj: Anta bypoll scheduled on November 11, result on 14
Jaipur, Oct. 7 -- Baran's Anta Assembly constituency in Rajasthan is all set for a by-election. Voting will take place on November 11, and results will be declared on November 14, according to a release from the Election Commission of India.
The seat fell vacant after the disqualification of former BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena, a supporter of ex-CM Vasundhara Raje, in May following his conviction in a 20-year-old case involving pointing a pistol at an SDM. By-election rules require that elections be held within six months of a seat falling vacant.
In the 2023 Assembly elections, Kanwar Lal Meena had defeated Pramod Jain Bhaya, a former minister in the Congress government and a prominent leader in the Hadoti region. Congress may field Bhaya again, setting the stage for a keenly watched contest. On the BJP side, there is a long list of contenders.
The last date for filing nominations is October 21, and the last date for withdrawal is October 27. The Election Commission has decided to use EVMs and VVPATs at all polling stations and has ensured that sufficient machines are available. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the district.
As per the final voter list published on October 1, Anta has 2,27,563 voters- 1,16,405 men, 1,11,154 women, and 4 others.
Since the formation of the BJP government in 2023, seven by-elections have been held, of which BJP won five and Congress only one. Congress and Hanuman Beniwal's RLP suffered significant losses in these elections. Before these by-elections, Congress held four of the seven seats, but now only retains one. Last year, by-elections were held in Khinvsar, Devli-Uniara, Jhunjhunu, Dausa, Chaurasi, Ramgarh, and Salumber. BJP won Khinvsar, Devli-Uniara, Jhunjhunu, Ramgarh, and Salumber.Currently, in the 200-member Rajasthan Assembly, BJP has 118 seats, Congress 66, BAP 4, BSP 2, independents 8, and RLD 1, with Anta now vacant.
Political analysts believe that the Anta by-election result will influence public perception. If BJP wins, it will be seen as an endorsement of the government. A loss could give the opposition a chance to attack the BJP....
