Raids across Bihar in multiple graft cases
PATNA, July 11 -- In a major crackdown on corruption, the Economic Offences Unit (EOU), Special Vigilance Unit (SVU), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bihar Police on Thursday conducted simultaneous raids at six locations linked to two government officials, including a DSP from the Excise and Prohibition Department.
One of the key officials under the scanner is Pramod Kumar, an Executive Engineer with Bihar State Educational Infrastructure Development Corporation (BSEIDC), who is facing a disproportionate assets (DA) case. According to officials, Kumar absconded prior to the raids, and efforts are underway to locate and arrest him.
The EOU conducted searches at multiple locations associated with Kumar, including his residence on Gola Road in Patna, his ancestral home in Sitamarhi, and a location in Sahara. The raids continued till evening and followed months of financial surveillance. The action was initiated based on credible inputs and a formal FIR registered on July 9.
Initial assessments revealed that Pramod Kumar had amassed property 309.61% more than his known sources of income. Search warrants were procured from the court.
According to a communique from the Economic Offences and Cyber Crime Unit, the assets amassed by Kumar through corrupt means include land purchases worth Rs.3.54 crore, bank deposits amounting to Rs.18.84 lakh, a vehicle worth Rs.11 lakh and Rs.5.29 lakh in cash.
"Incriminating documents such as land deeds, passbooks, and vehicle purchase papers have been seized and are being scrutinised. The total value of the assets is likely to increase. There are also reports of benami properties in Jharkhand and neighbouring states. It is further suspected that he may have already been dismissed from service," said an EOU official.
In another operation, the SVU conducted searches in Khagaria and Patna in a DA case against DSP Abhay Kumar Yadav, currently posted with Excise and Prohibition Department. Investigations revealed he had acquired assets 50.42% higher than his known sources of income.
Yadav, who joined the police force in 1994 as a sub-inspector, allegedly built a luxurious three-storey house with 15 rooms on five kattha land in Khagaria. Officials recovered movable and immovable assets worth Rs.2.12 crore, mine sale deeds for land valued in crores, over 25 Kisan Vikas Patras, more than 20 bank accounts, fixed deposit documents, gold and silver ornaments worth Rs.12 lakh, and Rs.1.05 lakh in cash.
The SVU arrested Ashok Kumar Verma, head clerk in the Education Department, after a written complaint by Rakesh Kumar, who alleged that Verma demanded Rs.1 lakh to sanction his wife's maternity leave.
In another raid, the CID arrested Niranjan Prasad Dangi, an Ameen (land acquisition official), while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.1 lakh at the Kishanganj District Board Office. The trap was laid following a complaint from Md Azmer Alam....
