Rahul walks the talk amidst standoff with admn, meets students; faces FIRs
Darbhanga, May 16 -- Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, defying attempts by the district administration to stop him from attending the pre-scheduled programme at Ambedkar Welfare Hostel (AWH) on Thursday, addressed a gathering of dalit, backward, and underprivileged students while emphasising his commitment to not let any force succeed in excluding these marginalised communities from the education system or hindering their career aspirations.
Rahul Gandhi was in Darbhanga to launch 'Shiksha Nyay Samvad', an outreach programme of the party in Bihar.
Despite the restrictions, he eventually reached the hostel on foot and addressed the gathering, asserting that the administration had failed to stop him. "No one can stop me until the reservation facility is extended to private education institutions. We will continue to fight and move ahead, because you constitute 90% of the population. You must understand your strength," he said while addressing the crowd. Emphasising systemic exclusion, Gandhi added, "Whether it is the bureaucracy, the corporate sector, or the high courts-your representation is zero. By scaring, suppressing and distracting you, they try to keep you from progressing. But Bihar police could not stop me, because your power was with me."
Gandhi accused the ruling NDA government of suppressing the voices of the marginalised and preventing dialogue. "The government should increase spending on education, the 50% ceiling on reservation must be removed and reservation should be implemented in private education institutions as well," he stated.
"This government is against dalits, extremely backward classes, minorities, and adivasis. This government is against democracy, the Constitution, and the minorities. This is the government of Adani-Ambani and not yours" Gandhi alleged.
Taking a dig at PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi said, "We told PM Narendra Modi that you have to conduct caste census... Under your pressure, PM Narendra Modi announced nationwide caste census. Scared of your pressure, he placed the Constitution on his forehead."
Addressing the students, he assured that the condition in hostels for SC, ST and backward class students would be improved as soon as his party came to power in Bihar. "My intention is to speak to you from the heart, to share my thoughts honestly and hear yours as well," Gandhi said.
Earlier on his arrival, Rahul Gandhi was stopped by the administration near Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU) here while he was en route to visit the students.
Pointing towards the heavy police deployment and closed gates, he remarked, "Look there - it's a complete spectacle. This is not democracy. The government is stopping me from entering, meeting you people".
Gandhi had a heated argument with district and police officials when his convoy was stopped from proceeding towards the Ambedkar Hostel amid the scorching heat. Visibly agitated, Gandhi tersely responded to Darbhanga SDO Vikas Kumar, who was reportedly seen urging him not to violate Section 144, which had been clamped in the area.
"You do your work, I am doing mine. I have made a commitment to the boys. This is a democracy, not a dictatorship," Gandhi retorted.
In a post in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter), he said, "The NDA's 'double-engine deceitful government' in Bihar is stopping me from interacting with dalit and backward students at the Ambedkar Hostel. Since when did dialogue become a crime? Nitish ji, what are you afraid of? Are you trying to hide the state of education and social justice in Bihar?"
Reacting to Gandhi's allegations, JD(U) MP and national working president Sanjay Jha said, "The administration did not give permission because is any political meeting ever held in a hostel? But when his party later sought permission in the town hall, they were given permission. He (Rahul Gandhi) did not care about any poor student or the backward. He only went there to do politics because there are elections in Bihar this year."
Meanwhile, FIRs were lodged against Rahul Gandhi and 30 others at Laheriasarai police station on Thursday evening. According to officials, one FIR has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), while the second pertains to organising a programme at the Ambedkar Welfare Hostel without permission.
The FIRs were confirmed by Darbhanga (Sadar) SDPO Amit Kumar and Sadar SDO (sadar) Vikas Kumar....
