PwD voters to receive better facilities during upcoming elections
PATNA, Sept. 10 -- The state election department has issued instructions to all field officers to ensure higher participation of voters categorised as persons with disabilities (PwD) and also provide better facilities at the booths so that the physically disabled voters do not face any inconvenience in visiting the polling stations to cast their votes.
A meeting of additional chief electoral officer, Bihar Prashant Kumar along with members of state steering committee on accessible election was held on Monday in which several issues regarding the facilities to be provided to PwD voters were discussed.
State media nodal officer Kapil Sharma said that as per ECINET app of the Election Commission of India (ECI), there are a total 6.90 lakh PwD voters .
At the meeting, it was also decided that volunteers for extending help to PwD voters would also be formed while various other initiatives would be taken for encouraging PwD voters to visit booths on the polling day to cast their votes.
"A comprehensive work plan for encouraging PwD voters would also be formed in districts with the help of the district level accessible committees," said Sharma.
In addition to it, the state media nodal officer also highlighted that inclusion of names in the voters list can be done after the publication of the final updated rolls on September 30 as part of the continuous updation process.
In previous elections, the ECI had laid focus on construction of ramps in buildings housing the polling stations for the convenience of voters with physical disabilities and also directed that volunteers should be deputed at the booths to extend any help to voters who were old, especially those in their late seventies and eighties.
Officials said that the facility of casting one's vote through postal ballot is also available for PwD voters and also those voters who are above the age of 85.
Those interested in casting votes through postal ballot have to apply by filling form 12 d and submit it to the returning officer....
