Purnea gang rape: One more arrested, tally reaches four
PURNEA, Jan. 17 -- Police in Bihar's Purnea on Thursday arrested one more accused in the sensational gang-rape case, taking the number of arrested people to four, officials said. Earlier, six people had been named in the FIR lodged by the victim.
Out of the four accused arrested, one is a woman.
In a press statement issued from the office of the superintendent of police (SP) Sweety Sahrawat on Thursday evening, 23- year old Mahtab alias Karu, a resident of Dagarua and one of the accused in gang-rape case, was arrested. Two other accused Mohammad Junaid and Mohammad Irfan, and a woman were already arrested.
The SP had earlier said that the police would probe the gang-rape case from human trafficking angle. This angle, according to another police officer, is being explored as the arrested woman has been found involved in human trafficking. "She was earlier an auto-rickshaw driver and had later turned to human trafficking," the police officer said.
"The police will also write to the Economic Offence Unit (EOU) to probe the assets she had amassed in recent years," added the police officer. He also added that the trafficking racket could have been spread to other states like West Bengal and even to neighbouring Nepal.
The 24-year-old woman, whose husband died a year ago, was allegedly gang-raped on January 10 by around six people. The woman was abducted in a car when she was waiting for someone at Newalal Chowk in Purnea town area. She was allegedly taken to a garage in Dagarua police station 15-km away from Purnea district headquarters. The woman who is undergoing treatment at government medical college and hospital (GMCH) in Purnea is recovering fast. The police lodged an FIR on Sunday on the basis of the statement of the victim against three identified and three unknown persons under the relevant sections of the BNS....
