Pumpkin seeds worth Rs.37 lakh seized, two smugglers held in Champaran
BETTIAH, March 20 -- A joint team of the 71st battalion of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two smugglers and seized a large quantity of pumpkin seeds, valued at Rs.37 lakh, that were being illegally transported into Indian territory from across the border, the SSB said on Thursday.
In an official statement issued on Thursday, the 71st battalion of the SSB said that, acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the SSB and the DRI laid a trap at Lakshmipur Loukhan on the Ghodasahan-Dhaka road under Ghodasahan police station limits and intercepted a truck carrying pumpkin seeds that had been brought in from Nepal late on Tuesday night.
"The seizure includes 300 bags, weighing 11,550 kg of pumpkin seeds," the statement said, putting the estimated value of the consignment at around Rs.37 lakh.
The arrested smugglers have been identified as Md. Hasib, a resident of Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, and Md. Salman, a resident of Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. They told officials that the consignment was being transported to Delhi.
