PATNA, May 29 -- Two prominent businessmen were shot dead by armed criminals in Saran district late on Tuesday evening, police said. The incident triggered protests in Chhapra town - the political bastion of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, who was first elected to the Lok Sabha from here. The victims were identified as Amarendra Singh, owner of a Godrej showroom, and his business partner Shambhu Singh. The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station. Amarendra Singh, a former mayoral candidate and president of the local Rotary Club, was a well-known figure in the community. According to police, the two were returning home on a motorbike after closing their showroom in Salempur Harimohan Gali when they were ambushed by two bike-borne assailants near Sadha Dhala. Shambhu Singh was shot in the head and Amarendra in the chest. Locals and police rushed them to Chhapra Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead. On Wednesday morning, angered by the killings, members of the business community staged a protest outside the official residence of the Saran Superintendent of Police. Saran SSP Kumar Ashish said the preliminary investigation suggests a possible angle of personal enmity, likely linked to property transactions or business rivalry. However, the victims' family members denied any involvement in property dealings. A forensic team was dispatched to the crime scene to collect evidence. Police have identified three suspects captured on CCTV conducting reconnaissance between the victims' showroom and the spot of the attack. In a separate incident, 22-year-old Mohammad Salman, a resident of the Bhagwan Bazar police station area in Chhapra, was stabbed to death. According to police, his elder brother Mumtaaz, a fruit vendor, said that 3-4 of Salman's friends called him from his home, took him to a secluded location in an auto-rickshaw, and attacked him. Salman was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Adding to the growing concern, Bihar recorded over 10 murders in Patna alone in the past week. Official data reveals that 2,930 people were murdered across the state in 2023, and the figure surpassed 3,000 in 2024. Meanwhile, the Buddha Colony police have launched an investigation into a video clip showing a trigger-happy youth. The five-second video, widely circulated on social media, shows two individuals on a motorcycle firing bullets near a temple on Boring Road. In a separate incident on May 24, a shooting occurred near Hartali More on Boring Road, where assailants in a black SUV opened fire - discharging eight rounds - following a dispute with locals.
