Dhanbad, April 16 -- Mounting anger over rising school fees and re-admission charges spilled onto the streets as parents staged a one-day hunger strike here on Wednesday. The protest, organised under Jharkhand Abhibhavak Mahasangh (JAM), saw large participation from parents alleging "arbitrary and exploitative" practices by private schools. Demonstrators accused institutions of charging hefty re-admission fees ranging between Rs.15,000 and Rs.20,000, while also forcing parents to purchase books, uniforms and shoes directly from schools. "We have already raised this issue with the education department and the district administration. Assurances were given, but no concrete action has followed," said JAM chief Pappu Singh, adding, "There is open loot in the name of admissions. Schools are charging exorbitantly and compelling parents to buy materials from them."...
