PATNA, July 10 -- Prof Alka, a teacher of home science from BRA Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, on Wednesday took over as first woman principal of prestigious Patna Science College of the Patna University. She takes over a time when the college will be heading towards its centenary celebrations less than two years from now. She is the first regular principal at Patna Science College appointed through the commission after over a decade. The college had started as the science department of Patna University, but since 1928 it began functioning independently. Its foundation stone was laid by Lord Irwin. Prior to her appointment, Alka worked as professor-in-charge of Vaishali Mahila College. She took over the charge from Atul Aditya Pandey, who was made principal on February 7. She will have a tenure of five years. The dean, student welfare explained the college culture and campus to Alka after her joining. All the teaching and non-teaching members of the college also gave farewell to Atul Aditya Pandey for his productive tenure as principal. Pandey, in his address, spoke about the glorious past and elaborated the reputation of the college reflected through its teaching and alumni association. "I thank the V-C for giving me opportunity to lead PSC and all others for their support during my five-month tenure as principal. The staff here are emotionally committed to the institution," he added. Alka said she had come from a small college and was aware of the huge legacy and rich culture of Patna Science College. "It is a dream come true for me to serve the premiere college of the state. I will be available to staff and students always and my priority will be to contribute in taking the college forward with students' progression and new courses," she added. Five Patna University colleges, except BN College, last month got new principals from the panel of names recommended by the Bihar State University Service Commission (BSUSC) through a draw of lots, as suggested by the Raj Bhawan. For the first time, of the five principals recommended for PU colleges, there will be two women and three from outside the university....
