Prez sanctions Lalu's trial in land-for-job case
PATNA, May 9 -- President Droupadi Murmu has given sanction to prosecute former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad in railway land-for-jobs money laundering case being investigated by ED, officials aware of the development said. "The prosecution sanction against Lalu Prasad Yadav, former union railway minister, as mandated under section 197(1) of Cr. PC (Section 218 of BNSS, 2023) has been accorded by the President in money laundering case of Land for Job in Railways. The PMLA investigation in the case, was initiated based on the CBI FIR's related to Land for Job Scam in Indian Railways. The FIR said that alleging that Lalu Yadav, as the then Railway Minister, allegedly indulged in corruption for appointment of Group D substitutes in Indian Railways during 2004- 2009," an official said.
According to the CBI's FIR, the candidates or their family members were told to transfer land as bribe in return for jobs in Indian Railways. These land parcels were directly/indirectly, registered in name of family members of the former chief minister. The CBI has till date filed 3 charge sheets and Supplementary Chargesheets in the matter.
On January 8, 2024, the Enforcement Directorate had filed a prosecution complaint (PC) against family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav, including Rabri Devi, Misha Bharti, Hema Yadav, his alleged close aide businessman Amit Katyal and two associated companies viz. M/s A K Infosystems Private Limited, M/s A B Exports Pvt. Ltd. before a PMLA Court in New Delhi. On August 6,2024 the ED filed a supplementary prosecution complaint against Yadav, Tejaswi Prasad and others
RJD termed the presidential consent for his prosecution only as a procedural matter. "It is a procedural matter. The CBI already had got a sanction from the President in the case earlier. The ED was required to get the sanction from the President in wake of a Supreme Court ruling in the case. That is why, it has been given as per process ," said Sanjay Yadav, RJD's Rajya Sabha MP, who is a considered close to former deputy CM, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.
The land-for-job case pertains to allegations that jobs in Group D category in railways were given to several beneficiaries in lieu of land given to Lalu and his family members during his stint as railway minister from 2004 to 2005.....
