Haridwar, Oct. 14 -- Haridwar police have constituted a joint team, including members of the Crime Investigation Unit, to trace and arrest a resident who allegedly decamped with Rs.28 lakh in cash and other valuables from an ashram in Jagjeetpur. The incident has created a stir among the local community. According to Mahamandaleshwar Swami Yamuna Puri Maharaj of the Kankhal-based Mahamrityunjay Muth, the accused, identified as Swami Vairagya Puri, formerly Vikas Singhal, a resident of Hastinapur in Uttar Pradesh, is suspected of fleeing with the money and valuables from the Jagjeetpur ashram on October 11. "I had gone to Punjab recently and returned on October 10. The next day, I received a message from Vairagya Puri stating that he was leaving. When I checked his room, I found Rs.28 lakh in cash -which had been entrusted to him for ashram construction work -missing, along with other valuables," said Swami Yamuna Puri. He added that the accused's phone has remained switched off since the incident and that he has not communicated with anyone from the ashram.
