Police fire in air to control irate mob following idol desecration on temple campus in Purnea
PURNEA, Sept. 20 -- Tension escalated in north eastern part of Bihar's Purnea adjacent to Kishanganj after the alleged vandalism and desecration at a village temple at Majgama Haat under Angarh police station. Police had to open fire in the air to control the mob which allegedly committed loot and arson after the incident, police officials said on Friday.
Unconfirmed report said one person was injured in the firing and was undergoing treatment at government medical college and hospital (GMCH) in Purnea.
The miscreants reportedly had damaged the clay statue of Goddess Durga under construction on the premises of the temple. Locals, outraged by the incident, apprehended one suspect and handed him over to police after thrashing him.
Purnea superintendent of police (SP) Sweety Sahrawat, who is camping in the village, told HT over phone that normalcy had returned in the village. "The broken idol was immersed into the river with the cooperation of the people and a new idol is being made," she said.
She admitted that police had to fire in the air to control a large number of people who had gathered after the incident and a man who was injured was undergoing treatment at GMCH. She categorically denied that he was injured in police firing. She said one suspect was taken into custody and further probe was underway. Police forces are camping in the village.
An eyewitness told HT, "We saw the broken idol in the precincts of the temple on Friday morning and soon the news of the incident spread and a large number of people gathered outside the temple and started demanding stringent punishment to the culprits," adding, "Some villagers later identified the suspect and caught him and handed him over to the police."
