Police crack revenge killing in a four-decade old land dispute case
PATNA, May 22 -- In a chilling act of suspected revenge over a four-decade-old land dispute, a 70-year-old man was bludgeoned to death by unidentified assailants in Gopalganj district on May 4, police said. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Viswambharpur police station of the district.
Police on Wednesday claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of one of the suspects, Sandesh Kumar Singh (32), the grandson of Jeeta Singh - who was allegedly murdered by the victim decades ago. During interrogation, Sandesh confessed to orchestrating the killing and revealed that he had hired criminals from Saharanpur to carry out the crime.
"In the intervening night of May 1 and 2, the hired criminals reached Ram Ratan's house, strangled him, and dumped his body in nearby bushes, about 1.5 km from his residence," said Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Awadhesh Dixit. He added that raids are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
Shockingly, Sandesh also helped the victim's family search for the body and participated in the cremation, police said.
The victim, identified as Ram Ratan Singh of Salehpur village, had gone missing on May 2. His wife, Uma Devi, lodged a missing complaint at the Viswambharpur police station on May 3. "My husband went to sleep outside the house after dinner on May 1, but by morning he was missing from his bed," she stated.
A few days later, an unidentified body was recovered from the Salehpur Chowkatola locality and was later identified as Ram Ratan. His body was sent to SKMCH, Muzaffarpur for post-mortem examination.
Police investigations revealed that Ram Ratan Singh had served a 10-year rigorous imprisonment for the 1982 murder of Jeeta Singh, his neighbour, in a land dispute. After his release, he had been living in hiding at Bhavpur, Uttar Pradesh, but returned to his native village only a few months ago....
