Police crack down on flesh trade, trafficking
PATNA, Aug. 1 -- The Weaker Section of Bihar CID has hit the streets from Thursday with operation 'Naya Savera', a campaign aimed at curbing human trafficking and rescuing women and minors from red light areas and orchestra groups. Under Naya Savera, anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) of Bihar police will begin crackdowns at brothels, hotels, orchestra groups, brick kilns, factories and red light areas suspected of being used as fronts for trafficking.
Additional director general of Weaker Section Amit Kumar Jain told HT that the campaign aimed to rescue and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking, child labour and flesh trade racket would continue till the eve of Independence Day. He said human trafficking was the biggest business after narcotics. The ADG said transgender help desk would be established in all the police stations of Bihar. After Tamil Nadu, Bihar was the only state with more than a dozen transgender joining police forces, he added.
From January to May this year, Bihar police registered 231 FIRs related to trafficking and immoral trade, in which 118 minor girls and 506 minor boys were rescued from exploitation. The police also arrested 17 women and 144 men traffickers.
"We are working on mission mode against child trafficking and exploitation and the results have been positive, with the rescue of 169 women including 51 adults, 506 minor boys in the last five months only. The figures pointed to a significant jump in rescue, as the number of minors rescued was just 71 and traffickers arrested was just 14 in 2024. "The number of rescued children was just two in 2023. There have been a higher number of orchestra groups operating in districts like Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Bettiah, Rohtas, Motihari etc. recently, 47 minor girls were rescued from an orchestra group in Rohtas," added Jain.
Even Saran police have rescued 194 minor girls through special drives against the traffickers operating as orchestra groups, arrested 61 accused and registered 24 cases since May 2024. The ADG further said that the DGP Vinay Kumar honored four IPS officials including Saran SP Kumar Ashish, city SP (West) Bhanu Pratap Singh, Rohtas SP Roshan Kumar and Patna rail SP, for their commendable work....
