PATNA, May 24 -- Amid refusal by the postgraduate (PG) girl medicos to shift to their newly constructed hostel, citing deficiencies, the medical superintendent of the state-run century old Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) on Friday flagged the matter with the principal for early action so that the space they were presently occupying at the nurses hostel could be allotted to the nursing staff, said officials. In his letter to PMCH principal Dr Vidyapati Choudhary, the superintendent Dr IS Thakur urged him to facilitate the shifting of the undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) girl medicos from the hostel for nurses to the newly constructed hostel for girls so that the nurses could move in. "Resentment is brewing among the 1200-strong nursing staff who have been forced to stay outside the hospital campus after their quarters were pulled down as part of the hospital renovation project. Now that their hostel is ready, most of the nurses want to move in fast, as they were facing a lot of inconvenience staying outside the campus. However, their hostel is presently occupied by the girl medicos for which I have requested the principal to get it vacated," said Dr Thakur. The PG medical girl students have, however, refused to vacate the quarter for nurses, citing lack of amenities in the hostel for girls. In a letter to the principal on April 30, the PG girl students objected to the common washrooms and their inadequate number in the 11-storey hostel for girls constructed by the L&T Constructions Ltd. As part of the PMCH redevelopment project. Besides, they also cited that the frequent shifting considering the approaching examinations cause mental harassment. They also objected to the forceful hostel allotment with UGs, saying most of the PG students were married and had families staying with them. The PG medicos, while refusing to shift to the new hostel, requested the principal to cancel the hostel allotment order issued by the warden of the PG girls' hostel on April 30. It is worth mentioning here that the hostel for nurses, ready in the first phase, has 160 single BHK units with attached toilets for 160 nurses, and 130 triple sharing rooms to accommodate 390 nurses. The girls' hostel has 240 single occupancy rooms and 280 twin-sharing with common toilets. "I have sent the representation the PG girl students gave me to the health department. I hope the girls will shift to their hostel soon," said PMCH principal Dr Choudhary, refusing to answer other queries. The 11-storey hostel for girls is part of the first of the total three phases of the PMCH renovation project, at an estimated cost of Rs 5,460 crore. When completed by 2030, it will catapult the PMCH to become the second largest hospital in the world, having 5460 patient beds by 2030. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar had laid the foundation stone of the PMCH redevelopment project on February 8, 2021, with a completion deadline of 2027-28. He inaugurated the central utility building, nursing hostel and the multi-level car parking on February 27, 2024. On May 3, he inaugurated two of the total four towers, each of 10-storey, of the first phase project. The two building towers have 22 modular operation theatres, 65-bed intensive care unit, 46-bed post-operation room, two private suites, 10 deluxe and 26 private rooms for patients, in addition to a helipad, adding 1117 patient beds to its existing capacity of 1750 beds at the hospital....
