PATNA, May 13 -- A scuffle broke out between doctors and attendants and security guards at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) after a-60-year-old woman died due to alleged negligence by doctors, said people in the know on Monday. The situation escalated after the attendants of the woman accused the doctors of being responsible for her death. On being informed, a police team from Alamganj reached the spot and intervened to bring the situation under control. Satish Kumar said his mother Meenda Devi (60) was admitted to the orthopaedics department of the hospital due to a fractured leg. "The doctors had planned a surgery for Wednesday. However, my mother died early Monday morning. When we asked for the death certificate, it was being written on a plain piece of paper." Attendants insisted on receiving a proper death certificate. An argument broke out between the on-duty PG doctor in the emergency ward and the patient's relatives, which led to a scuffle. The family members alleged that the doctor and the security guards assaulted them, injuring some of the relatives, said police. Dr Om Prakash, head of the orthopedics department, NMCH, said Meena Devi, a resident of Chamdoriya in Patna City, was admitted on May 8.The ball of the patient's hip was to be replaced. The surgery was scheduled for Wednesday, but the patient died before that. There was no negligence in the treatment." NMCH superintendent Dr Rashmi Prasad said, "The patient was treated properly and there was no negligence. A proper death certificate is always provided."...
