Owaisi to lead AIMIM yatra in Seemanchal
KISHANGANJ, Sept. 24 -- All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi will lead the party's 'Nyay Yatra' in Seemanchal from today. The move comes after AIMIM received no response from the INDIA bloc, particularly the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), regarding its request to join the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) to mount a strong electoral challenge against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls.
The yatra is aimed at highlighting the alleged injustices faced by people during the NDA government's rule in the state, said Bihar AIMIM president Akhtarul Iman.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday (September 22) posted that he would stay in Seemanchal from September 23 to September 27, indicating that the party is going the whole hog in the coming assembly elections against both mainstream alliances, the INDIA bloc and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
The post also suggests that the AIMIM will explore the possibilities of an alliance in Seemanchal in a similar fashion as it did in 2020 when AIMIM, along with the Samajwadi Janta Dal Democratic, RLSP, BSP and PSP, had formed the Grand Democratic Secular Front (GDSF) to fight against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Grand Alliance. "During his five-day-long visit to Seemanchal, Owaisi will take out the Nyay Yatra and, in between, hold over 24 public meetings across all four districts of Seemanchal - Kishanganj, Araria, Katihar and Purnea - which have a substantial Muslim population," said Bihar AIMIM president Akhtarul Iman.
The Yatra is expected to highlight issues of backwardness, illiteracy, unemployment and poverty.
"We are looking forward to exploring new alliances by holding parleys with new friends and parties so that we can put up a formidable electoral contest in the coming assembly elections by maintaining equal distance from both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the INDIA bloc," a senior party leader told HT. However, he added, "Such decisions will be taken by our leader."
But the political equations this time are different from those of 2020, and hence AIMIM will adopt a wait-and-watch policy.
"The AIMIM will look to forge alliances with disgruntled parties of the INDIA bloc and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Be sure some parties will break away from these two alliances after the seat-sharing deal," political analyst Prof NK Srivastava said, adding, "AIMIM is desperate to forge an alliance with PK's Jan Suraaj, but PK is firm on contesting the election solo."
"At first, Owaisi will hold meetings in all the five assembly segments where the party had won in 2020 to revive and re-energize its support," AIMIM inner party sources said, claiming, "The AIMIM has its base intact despite the fact its four MLAs defected to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in 2022."
Bihar party president Akhatarul Iman said, "Though the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) succeeded in engineering a split in our party, our people are intact with us."
He reiterated that his party had approached the RJD openly, not to gain electorally but to dislodge the NDA from Bihar. He expressed dismay over the RJD's cold response. "RJD's obdurate refusal has proved that AIMIM is no longer a 'B' team of the BJP as alleged by RJD and Congress," he claimed. On the other hand, AIMIM has started holding its assembly-wise meetings ahead of the assembly election. On Sunday, the party held a meeting in Munger. Munger party president Mohammad Shahid Hussain accused the RJD and the Congress of cheating Muslims.
"These two parties need our votes, but they are always reluctant to give tickets to Muslims," he alleged, hoping that "Muslims - over 14 lakh in 22 assembly seats under Munger division - will teach a lesson to the RJD and the Congress in the coming election."
AIMIM, which entered electoral politics in Bihar through Seemanchal in 2015, opened its account in the 2019 by-election when Qamrul Hoda defeated the Congress candidate in the Kishanganj assembly seat.
Later, in 2020, the party surprised all political pundits by winning five seats, pushing the RJD to just one seat in Seemanchal, which comprises 24 assembly seats....
