PURNIA, July 24 -- Two drug peddlers from West Bengal were arrested with a consignment of smack in Bihar's Purnia district on Wednesday, police said, adding that the narcotics were meant to be delivered to youths in Araria. The accused - Mohammad Saidul Sheikh (35) and Mohammad Atiur Sheikh (34) - both residents of Kaliachak in Malda district of West Bengal, were apprehended while boarding a tempo in the Gulabbagh area, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sweety Sahrawat told mediapersons. "The arrested peddlers have been very active in the region. They had already delivered narcotics consignments twice before. This time, they were caught while attempting to deliver the third consignment to peddlers in Araria," the SP said. A total of 2,136 grams of smack, packed in 22 packets of about 100 grams each, was seized from them. Each packet sells for around Rs.1 lakh in the market, making the total estimated value of the seized smack over Rs.22 lakh, she added. "We have identified the source and kingpin of the smuggling racket and will arrest them soon," Sahrawat said, noting that the names of several local contacts have also emerged during interrogation. "Police will nab all those involved. This is a major breakthrough in our ongoing crackdown on drug peddling." She said that a special drive is underway in the district to curb narcotics trafficking, and the alertness of the police team led to the latest arrest. "Interrogation of the accused has revealed the extent of the network and the identity of associates who help distribute drugs to end-users across the Seemanchal region." In December last year, Purnia police had seized 5.190 kg of smack, valued at nearly Rs.5 crore, packed in 50 packets and hidden in the dicky of a car coming from Manipur. Two persons - Raunak Kumar and Ricky Singh, both residents of Purnia town - were arrested in that case. More recently, Purnia police busted another drug racket involved in exchanging stolen or lifted mobile phones for smack. Sixteen mobile phones and a quantity of smack were recovered, and one person was arrested. On June 15, police had arrested eight persons, including a woman, and seized 300 grams of smack from their possession....
