Oppn targets SIR draft roll, EC issues detailed rebuttal
PATNA, Aug. 3 -- The Opposition parties, especially Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal, on Saturday sharpened attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing it of working at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and "deliberate anomalies" in the just concluded first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The first draft of the verified voter rolls were published on Friday, recording deletion on 6.56 million electors.
The NDA allies, led by the BJP, are responding to charges of the Opposition both in Parliament and outside, asking the Opposition to present proof to back their accusations.
"The truth is that the election system in India is already dead... In the coming few days, we are going to prove to you without any doubt how a Lok Sabha election can be rigged," LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said. Alleging that voters were "changed" in the Maharashtra assembly and Lok Sabha elections, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "How can there be nine voters in a small room and nine thousand voters in a single hostel in Maharashtra? Is this Election Commission or Modi ji's puppet," he said.
In the latest and explosive allegation, Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav said in a press conference in Patna that his own name was missing in the post-SIR draft roll. It was however rebutted by the ECI and state administration by showing his name duly listed as a voter in Patna.
The controversy started when Yadav, during a presser, tried to find out his name by going to a link of ECI for searching one's name through EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card). He connected his phone to a large screen and tried to search his own EPIC number, which threw up the result "no records found". As many attempts did not yield results by putting his EPIC number, Yadav said that it only suggested that his name is "missing" from the draft electoral roll.
"Now look! I am not registered as a voter. This disqualifies me from contesting elections. Perhaps, I cease to be treated as a citizen and stand deprived of the right to live in this house," Yadav said, even as his party leaders were seen busy trying to search the senior RJD leader's name through various links. The RJD leader, looking a bit perplexed, and also asserted that he had photographed himself with a booth level officer just to have evidence that he had submitted his enumeration form (ER).
The former deputy chief minister also showed his EPIC number which his colleagues were putting in the search links for verifying their leader's name in the draft rolls. A call was also made to Patna DM, S M Thiyagarajan.
Meanwhile, as the confusion prevailed, the ECI made a swift response. As per agency reports, the ECI said in a statement: "It has come to our attention that Tejashwi Yadav has made a mischievous claim that his name does not appear in the draft electoral roll. His name is listed at Serial Number 416 in the Draft Electoral Roll. Therefore, any claim stating that his name is not included in the draft electoral roll is false and factually incorrect."
The District Administration of Patna also clarified the situation and mentioned that his name is included at polling station number 204, Library Building of Bihar Animal Science University, as per agency reports.
Speaking n the issue, Patna DM Thiyagarajan said, "It has been learned from some news sources that the name of the Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav is not in the draft voter list of SIR. An investigation was conducted in this regard by the District Administration, Patna. It has become clear that the name of the Leader of the Opposition is recorded in the draft voter list."
"At present, his name is recorded at polling station number 204, Library Building of Bihar Animal Science University, serial number 416. Earlier, his name was recorded at polling station number 171, serial number 481, Library Building of Bihar Animal Science University," Patna DM added.
The ruling National Democratic Alliance ( NDA) constituents -- BJP and JD(U) -- were quick to slam Tejashwi for his "false" claims stating that it had exposed how the Opposition leader was trying to spread misinformation about the SIR and its findings.
Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary said that the claims made by Tejashwi that his name was deleted from the draft rolls was totally false, misleading and factually incorrect aimed at defaming a constitutional body like the ECI. "Yadav's name exists in the draft rolls but he has made a false statement, which is an attempt to raise a question mark over the fairness of elections. The state government has full faith in the impartiality and transparency of the ECI," Choudhary said. The deputy CM also took potshots at the Opposition leader, stating that the ordinary people of the state now have started doubting the capabilities of Yadav after this episode as the latter had failed to read his name in the draft rolls.
"All these attempts by the RJD to create fear and apprehension among people's minds is proving to be a damp squib," said Choudhary....
