PATNA, July 9 -- The Bihar police has sounded high alert in the entire state over the chakka jaam (statewide protests) called by RJD, Congress and Left parties against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the law and order situation in the state.
Similarly, security was beefed up around railway infrastructure and to ensure tracks are not blocked. Anticipating chaos, schools in Bihar already announced holiday on Wednesday.
The bandh originally called by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav is likely to see participation of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. Besides, independent leaders like Purnia MP Pappu Yadav has also announced to take part in the agitation.
In view of bandh, which police anticipates could turn violent, special contingents of armed police are being deployed specially in North Bihar and Magadh range. Police has also warned of action against persons who are found spreading rumours about bandh and violence.
The state police headquarters, in a circular to all the 38 districts, has directed to enhance the security measures at vital installation and other public places during the Bandh. The PHQ asked the intelligence sleuths to be more active while the district police have been directed to be more vigil at the railway and bus stations, airports and other places where the bandh supporters can strike.
The railways, which have always been soft target of such bandh participants, have been provided adequate security.
Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar said that there is no need to panic because of the bandh. "A special team has been tasked to monitor social media. However, police are prepared to deal with any kind of violence, law and order situation," he said. Those indulged in violence and disturbance will be booked as per law, he added.
