PATNA, Aug. 17 -- An undertrial prisoner, who escaped with four others from Samastipur court on May 28, was killed in an encounter with a joint police team of Vaishali, Muzaffarpur and Special Task Force (STF) late on Thursday, officials said. An STF jawan was also injured in the exchange of fire. The slain criminal was identified as Arvind Sahni (30), a resident of Vaishali, carrying a reward of Rs.50,000. Vaishali Superintendent of Police (SP) Lalit Mohan Sharma said that Sahni was wanted in at least 22 cases of murder, loot, dacoity, and arms smuggling, besides a major jewellery heist in Chhattisgarh. Acting on a tip-off, a joint police team surrounded Chintamanipur village under Vaishali police station limits. On spotting the police, Sahni and his aides opened fire. In the retaliatory action, Sahni sustained bullet injuries while his accomplices fled. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Sahni was also involved in the 2019 gold heist at the Hajipur office of a private finance company, police said. "We have launched an intensive search for the other gang members. The operation will continue until their arrest," SP Sharma added. According to reports, five prisoners were brought to Samastipur court in May for appearance in different cases. After the hearing, all five attempted to escape. One was caught immediately, while four - Rajnandan alias Chhotu alias Haider, Arvind Sahni (Vaishali), and Manish Kumar and Manjeet Kumar (Muzaffarpur's Mungauli village) - managed to flee. Nagendra Mahto of Vaishali's Daulatpur Chandi was caught during the attempt. Two policemen sustained minor injuries in an attack by villagers in Bihar's Katihar district late Friday evening. They were attacked after they stopped a biker during a vehicle-checking drive, officials said. SP Shikhar Choudhary told HT over phone that the two policemen were conducting a routine vehicle-checking drive when a motorcyclist refused to stop. The policemen chased him to Parteli village under Muffasil police station, where an altercation broke out, leading to a mild assault. He said three persons were arrested in this connection....
