Nitish's welfare blitzkrieg aims at bolstering image, silencing Oppn
PATNA, June 26 -- In poll-bound Bihar, the NDA government at the Centre and state are on a project inauguration spree. This serves the twin purpose of justifying its development oriented image and also silencing the opposition who are alleging that CM Nitish Kumar was in an "unconscious state", given his health conditions.
The JD(U)-BJP alliance is contesting the state elections on the development plank, citing the number of projects launched both by the state and the Union government. For the BJP, the election slogan is in sync with Centre's policy statement of self-reliance as the party is pitching for 'Atma Nirbhar Bihar'.
While Prime Minister Narenrda Modi, since February, had inaugurated schemes/projects worth Rs.67,900 crore, chief minister Nitish Kumar since his Pragati Yatra ended in February this year, gave wings to about 430 development projects worth Rs.50,000 crores. If that was not enough, the Kumar-led NDA government has made one announcement after another in a bid to appease/target different sections of voters.
The PM started his Bihar visit on February 24 where he released Rs.22,000 crore through DBT (direct benefit transfer) in bank accounts of farmers. For Bihar, 75 lakh farmers got Rs. 1,600 crore through DBT third instalment. He followed this with the inauguration of schemes worth Rs.13,480 crores at Madhubani, Rs.48,520 crore at Karakat and Rs.5,900 crore at Siwan. If BJP top leaders are to be believed, the PM would be making more than six to nine more such visits from July till mid-August.
His alliance partner and Bihar CM Kumar is also matching PM's effort to woo the voters by inaugurating schemes/projects worth more than Rs.6,700 crore since May alone. To cap it all, recently Kumar announced an increase in the monthly pension for elderly, disabled persons, and widowed women from Rs.400 to Rs.1,100. A decision, which will take effect from July, would impact 1,09,69,255 beneficiaries under the state's Social Security Pension Scheme.
In another major decision, Kumar also announced to double the honorarium of all the workers associated with Jeevika. The state government announced to bear the additional amount of honorarium increase of these employees; lowered the interest rate on loans taken by self-help groups under the Jeevika project.
Earlier on June 12, chief minister Kumar had increased the limit of giving administrative approval of schemes in MNREGA for the head of the Gram Panchayats from the existing Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The government also announced increasing the monthly allowance of representatives of all levels of Panchayati Raj institutions by one and a half times.
"Our CM Nitish Kumar is committed to development and cares for all sections. Chief Minister Kumar has proved his activeness by participating in 79 programs in just 75 days," said JD (U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar.
Leader of opposition Tejashwi Yadav and other leaders had been alleging that CM Nitish is no longer capable of running Bihar. Yadav on Wednesday launched an attack on the Chief Minister, alleging that the latter was rolling out unrealistic schemes fearing electoral defeat. In a sharply worded post on the social media platform X, Tejashwi described the flurry of announcements by the Nitish government as a poll gimmick.
Taking a direct swipe at the NDA, Tejashwi wrote, "Seeing the strength of the Mahagathbandhan, the determination of the people for change and the apparent defeat in the elections, the corrupt Bhunja Party (Nitish Kumar government) can make any announcements."...
