KATIHAR, Sept. 10 -- Union minister of finance and corporate affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman, who had announced the formation of the Makhana Board in Bihar in her budget speech will visit Bihar's Katihar on Wednesday to explore its possibility in the district which has excelled in makhana production during the last over a decade. Makhana growing farmers in Bihar's Seemanchal and Kosi regions produce 70 per cent of the overall makhana yield in the country. During her four-hour stay in Katihar district, she will visit a makhana pond at Kalsar Panchayat falling under Hasanganj block to observe the makhana cultivation and later she is expected to visit its processing unit at Chhitabari falling under Katihar (sadar) block. "She will interact with makhana farmers, workers engaged in harvesting and processing during her visit to the district," highly placed sources said, claiming it "a big boost to makhana farming in Seemanchal in Bihar." Besides, she will visit two gram panchayats (Jagannathpur and Rampur of Hasanganj block) to participate in the financial inclusion (FI) campaign.
