Murmu calls for innovations with compassion to shape India's future
Dhanbad, Aug. 2 -- President Droupadi Murmu on Friday addressed the 45th convocation of IIT (ISM) in Dhanbad, where she urged students to use their knowledge for the public good and nation-building.
A total of 1,880 students from the 2024-25 batch were awarded degrees across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. The ceremony also saw the conferring of 37 gold medals, 35 silver medals, and 21 sponsored medals and awards in recognition of academic excellence. Congratulating the graduating students, the President said that IIT (ISM), with its nearly 100-year-old legacy, had evolved from a specialised mining and geology institution into a premier centre for multidisciplinary education and advanced research. She commended the institute for aligning its educational and research goals with the needs of society.
"The future of our country is being shaped in institutions like this, where innovation and compassion go hand in hand," she said. "Use your education not just for personal success, but to build a more inclusive and environmentally responsible India."
She said that in an era marked by climate change, technological disruption, and growing inequalities, institutions such as IIT (ISM) must take the lead in developing sustainable, interdisciplinary solutions. "Innovation driven by compassion-not just intelligence - is what truly makes the world better," she added.
Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, in his address, praised the institute's contributions to research and innovation and highlighted the need to strike a balance between energy, environment, and mineral resource management. He also emphasised the importance of making education inclusive and accessible to all.
Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan termed the convocation a key milestone in the lifelong journey of learning and encouraged students to explore paths beyond conventional employment. "Be job creators, not job seekers," he said, urging students to channel their education into entrepreneurship and start-up ventures.
Sudivya Kumar, the Jharkhand minister for higher and technical education, among other portfolios, extended his greetings to the degree recipients and acknowledged IIT (ISM)'s long-standing role in mineral exploration and national development.
