SAMASTIPUR, Sept. 27 -- A mukhiya facing murder charge was gunned down by unidentified assailants in Bihar's Samastipur district late on Thursday night, police said. The deceased has been identified as Manoranjan Giri, two-term elected head of Karihara panchayat. His body was found near a water tank beside the Satanpur mosque under Ujiarpur police station limits around 8.15 pm. Police recovered four empty cartridges, an abandoned motorcycle and a helmet from the spot. The Superintendent of Police (SP) office confirmed the killing of the sitting mukhiya. Following the incident, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Ujiarpur police station rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. Forensic experts were also called in to collect evidence. Dalsingsarai Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Vivek Kumar Sharma said, "The body was lying face down, so the exact number of bullet wounds cannot be confirmed immediately." Manoranjan Giri was an accused in the August 21 murder of Vikram Giri, a resident of Madhodih village, who was shot dead while out on bail in a murder case.
