BETTIAH, Dec. 30 -- In an unusual complaint that left many police officials amused and alarmed in equal measure, a man in Bihar's East Champaran district on Monday approached the Motihari town police, seeking help to trace a 'missing' billar (tomcat), which he suspected has been stolen. Rajesh Kumar, a jeweller by profession, who lives in Miscot Ramna on Ahirpatti road in Motihari, headquarters of East Champaran district, submitted a written application requesting police officials to locate the animal, saying the Billar had been living in his house for the past six months and had become "almost like a family member". "Golden in colour, the billar was very attractive to look at. The animal which would roam around the whole day, made it a point to reunite with us in the evening. Over the months, we all had developed infatuation with the animal. But with its sudden disappearance on December 24 has left all our family members in a pensive mood," said the complaint, that further urged officials to help recover the animal. "I believe someone has taken it away," he added, referring to the billar. Billar (tomcat) is a sexually mature and unneutered male cat which is known for roaming human habitats, fighting and marking territory. People familiar with the matter said Kumar was visibly distressed after the disappearance of the billar and made several inquiries in the neighbourhood before approaching the authorities. Meanwhile, the matter has become a talk of the town. Some described it an individual's "genuine concern" for animal, others disapproved the move as frivolous, saying, "It amounts to wasting valuable time of the police." When contacted, Rajeev Ranjan, station house officer (SHO), Town police said a snaha (station diary) had been registered today (Monday). "We have received a written request regarding a missing cat. Since it does not fall under any cognisable offence, no FIR has been lodged. A station diary (snaha) has been registered," the SHO said, adding that the matter was being looked at....
