MOKAMA, Nov. 1 -- Amid fears of electoral violence returning to the poll landscape of Bihar, tension pervades through Mokama where Dularchand Yadav, 75, a local strongman, was allegedly killed while campaigning for Jan Suraaj candidate. His kin claim that he was shot dead and run over by a vehicle belonging to area's most notable muscleman and the JD(U) candidate, Anant Singh. Singh has been named in one FIR filed by Yadav's kin. Yadav's body was sent for post-mortem by evening on Friday and the autopsy report was to be released after supervision of a medical board. Mokama is merely 100-km away from capital Patna and is now connected via a four-lane road that makes it only a few hours away. The spot of the incident still remains frozen in Thursday's frame. In the middle of a long stretch of land, two damaged SUVs and one toppled in a ditch give a tell-tale sign of the mishap which took place before Dularchand fell, with additional police deployment for the safety of the abandoned vehicles. Due to the tense situation, fear of retaliation and anger among the locals, Dularchand's body could be taken for post mortem to the Barh Sub-divisional Hospital only after 18 hours of his death as police had a tough time convincing people for formalities. Relatives and supporters of Dularchand formed a procession with his body on way to the hospital. It began at 12 noon and reached the hospital at 2 am, with people raising slogans and carrying placards calling for justice to the victim and punishment to the killers. Near Pandarak, the procession also came under stone pelting in the presence of police and the situation turned ugly. Firing and bomb blasts were also heard, said the police, adding that the situation was brought under control with reinforcement from nearby police stations. The anger and fear among the locals is palpable, with none wanting to speak anything, shops closed, police and paramilitary forces doing flag marches and people watching all this from the confines of their homes. On persistent prodding, some people only warn against the likely future turn of events. "Just wait and watch. All we can say is what we have gathered. The supporters of Jan Suraaj Party and JD(U) came face to face. The JSP vehicles came under attack and there was also firing, the sound of which people heard," he added. RJD candidate Veena Devi, wife of another local strongman Surajbhan Singh, and her family members also attended Dularchand's funeral procession. Speaking to the media, Veena said, "The election is one thing, but our families share personal ties. As soon as we heard about the incident, we cancelled our campaign schedule. We demand a magistrate-level inquiry on camera to ensure fairness." Around 12 noon, SSP Kartikey Sharma and Rural SP Vikram Sihag reached the slain Dularchand's residence at Tartar village to record statements of the family members, and said that further action would follow after examination of the collected evidence from the spot and post mortem report. Rural SP Vikram Sihag told HT that two separate FIRs have been registered in Dularchand's murder case and five persons, including Anant Singh, his two nephews and others -- Karmveer Singh, Rajveer Singh, Kanjay Singh and Chhotan Singh -- have been named. It has been alleged that Dularchand was shot in the leg and crushed by a vehicle. In another FIR, Jan Suraaj candidate Priyadarshi has been named along with four others for damaging vehicles. In an FIR, Neeraj Yadav, Dularchand's grandson, said, "We were with him, his car was ahead, and mine was right behind. We were just behind him when the incident happened. I didn't see it directly, but when the first bullet hit my grandfather, he told me, "Neeraj, run!' Even in his final moments, he wanted me to escape," he said. "While I was running, I saw Karmveer and Rajveer holding my grandfather and taking him toward Anant Singh, and Anant Singh fired the shots," he added. Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor clarified that Dularchand wasn't officially the worker of Jan Suraaj and he was supporting the Jan Suraaj candidate. Dularchand Yadav was a prominent figure in Mokama's political and social landscape, known both for his influence and his controversial past. Once considered one of the most powerful personalities in the Tal region during the 1980s and 1990s, he had close ties with several political leaders, including former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, and current chief minister Nitish Kumar. He had contested elections from Mokama in 1990 against Anant's elder brother but lost....
