MMCH doctor receivesRs.1-crore extortion call
PATNA, Jan. 11 -- A Gaya-based doctor has filed a police complaint after allegedly receiving a Rs.1 crore extortion threat from an unidentified person claiming to be calling from abroad, officials said on Saturday. Neurologist department head of Magadh Medical College and Hospital, Dr Satyendra Kumar, filed the complaint at Magadh Medical police station, stating that he was threatened twice with death through separate phone calls.
"Dr Kumar has mentioned in his complaint that he received a death threat if he fails to meet the caller's demand of Rs.1 crore," said DIG Anand Kumar, who holds the charge of Gaya SSP.
The Bihar chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) condemned the incident and asked the state government to immediately arrest the accused.
"The incident is not only a matter of concern for Dr Kumar, but is extremely frightening and a matter of insecurity for the entire medical fraternity. Therefore, we demand immediate action and arrest of the accused," the IMA members said.
According to Dr Kumar's complaint, he first received an extortion call on December 27 when he was at his clinic located at Magadh Colony Road No 7. His wife was also present on the occasion. The caller refused to identify himself and directly demanded Rs.1 crore. Later, he threatened to kill him if he did not pay money. Later on December 31, when the doctor was present at his flat in Patna, he received another call from the same number....
